Comparison of Fresh and Fixed Organ Weights of Tested Rats

Abstract

|
20 male and 20 female rats from both control and treatment groups in a subacute toxicity test were used in this experiment. 41 male and 42 female cats from a control group, and 36 male and 46 female rats from a treatment group in a chronic carcinogenicity test were also used in the experiment. Organs were taken, weighed, and fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin or Bouin´s solution. Following 72 hours after fixation the organs were reweighed. The fixation induced organ weight changes were variable among organs and between sexes in both tests. However, the comparison of the organ weight between control and treatment groups revealed no statistical significance due to fixation. The result of this study, therefore. suggests that fixed organ weights may be substituted for fresh organ weights in toxicity tests.
